The skinny: The Wahine shot just 29.8 percent and commited 18 turnovers in losing their opener in Los Angeles. Hawaii (0-1) got 38 of its 44 points from its five returnees. Senior Briana Harris, junior Sarah Toeaina and sophomore Olivia Crawford each finished with eight points, while sophomore twins Leah and Lahni Salanoa both added seven.

Recruiting: Coach Laura Beeman picked up three additions with the signing of high school seniors Lauren Rewers (Lake City High School/Coeur d’Alene, Idaho), Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard (John Paul College/Kalgoorlie, Western Australia), and Jayden Alexander (Monroe High School/Monroe, Wash.).

Rewers, a 6-foot-4 center, averaged 12.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 5.9 blocks and 1.5 assists per game at Lake City during her junior season. She was a two-time first-team all-Inland Empire League selection, and holds the league record with 10 blocks in a game.

Hoycard, a 6-foot-3 forward, is averaging 20.8 points per game for CBC Basketball Club in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

Alexander, a 5-10 guard, averaged 18.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game as a junior at Monroe in 2015-16.

VOLLEYBALL

Thursday

Hawaii def. UC Irvine 25-14, 25-13, 25-18

The skinny: Reigning Big West Player of the Week Annie Mitchem tied her career-high with a match-high 13 kills Thursday in Irvine, Calif., and Emily Maglio tied her career-high with nine blocks as the Wahine (19-5, 12-1) won their seventh match in a row.

Mitchem hit .481 with 13 kills on 27 attacks and Nikki Taylor added 11 kills and hit a season-high .733 with no errors in 15 swings.

UH out-blocked the Anteaters (10-17, 5-8) 14-1.

Saturday

at UC Davis, 5 p.m.

The skinny: The Wahine play their final regular-season match against the Aggies (13-13, 6-7), who they have only lost to once in nine tries all-time.

UH swept Davis in mid-October in Honolulu.

Recruiting: Hawaii signed three players – Sophia Howling, Shaney Lipscomb, and Skyler Williams – from California on Thursday for the 2017 season.

Howling is a 6-foot-3 middle hitter out of Venice High School in Los Angeles, where she has recorded more than 300 kills in both her sophomore and junior seasons with the Gondoliers.

The two-year team captain has earned several accolades during her high school career—including being named to PrepVolleyball’s Senior Ace List and their 2017 Juniors List .

Lipscomb is a 6-2 middle/outside hitter from San Diego, who was named to several “senior watch lists” including PrepVolleyball.com’s “Class of 2017 Senior Aces: The 150.

Williams is a 6-2 middle hitter from Mayfair High School in Lakewood, and an all-league first team selection.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Recruiting: The Wahine signed three high school seniors, including 5-4 Presley Forbes, who is out of Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Calif. She is the youngest player ever to get a California Beach Volleyball Association rating.

Lea Monkhouse, a 6-0 Canadian, was on a team that won the 2016 Canadian National championships (18U).

Julianna “Pani” Napoleon, 5-8, was an indoor standout – she earned an all-league selection Bonita Vista High School in Chula Vista, Calif. in 2015 – who turned her focus full time to beach volleyball this past summer.
